"Čistoća" in Kragujevac prepares Waste Management Study - new sanitary landfill "Vitlište" soon

The expert team of Kragujevac's public utility company "Čistoća" in Kragujevac is preparing the Waste Management Study. According to Dragoljub Grujović, the CEO of that company, aforementioned team and the job they need to do are parts of the project for making Local Ecological Action Plan.

As a part of the waste management strategy, opening of new sanitary landfill "Vitlište" is in the pipeline. It will be of regional type and it will be at the disposal of the municipalities of Kragujevac, Rekovac and Knić. Between 20 and 30m EUR are required for construction of new modern sanitary landfill that will be in accordance with all environment protection norms. All necessary security measures will be introduced and, once the strategy is adopted, the landfill will be opened.

The aim of the waste management strategy is that waste be maximally processed and used as a raw material in a production process or as a fuel. The plan is that 90% of waste be precessed through recycling, composting and thermal processing, and that only 10% ends on the landfill.

- We must also find the way to solve the problem of dangerous waste of medical origin, electronic and radioactive waste - says Grujović

The problem of mixing public utility and dangerous waste must also be solved through the waste management organization programme, and households should be obliged to select waste and hand dangerous waste to the authorized collector.

Grujović points out that there is no primary selection of waste in Serbia, so that the citizens will soon start receiving bags for dry waste for processable waste, which will make the process of its further treatment easier.

Public utility company "Čistoća" started the waste paper baling campaign in early July 2009. This company now bales between 1.5 and 2 tons of paper per day.
