After the public procurement procedure for the construction of the Port of Smederevo was stopped in April, the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of Serbia has announced that the realization of this project will continue this year. Assistant minister for water transport, Veljko Kovacevic, said that he expected the contractor to be selected and for the first works to start by September.

Let us remind that, in late 2019, the ministry opened a public procurement procedure for the reconstruction and construction of a terminal for bulk and general cargo at the Port of Smederevo, and the bid submission deadline was February 27, 2020.

However, this procedure was stopped on April 15, 2020. As said in the explanation, the reason for this is that the technically acceptable offer exceeded the funds available. According to the tender documentation, the works were supposed to be financed 50/50 from the credit of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the state budget.

The works entail the development of the current port area and the terminal of close to 3.8 ha and the construction of a new part of the port 21 ha, as the extension of the existing port area.

Kovacevic announced that the designing of the port in Belgrade continued and, as the ministry told eKapija, the works can be expected to start in the first quarter of 2022.

– We expect to have the location for the new port in Belgrade chosen in the second half of June – Kovacevic told Tanjug.

As he said, in the past two months, the design project for the construction of new capacities of the Port of Bogojevo and the Port of Prahovo has been agreed too.

– The designing will take around a year and a half, which means that, by the end of 2021, there could be the first works as well – Kovacevic said and added that it was expected for the agreement and the beginning of the expansion of the capacities of the Port of Sremska Mitrovica to begin by the end of 2020.
