The ATLAS project (Artificial Intelligence Theoretical Foundations for Advanced Spatio-Temporal Modeling of Data and Processes) entails theoretical research in this dynamic discipline and its implementation in environmental protection primarily. The leader of the project is professor Endre Pap of the Singidunum University, and the team from the Institute, led by Dr Andreja Stojic, also consists of Dr Dimitrije Maletic, Dr Dusan Vudragovic, Dr Gordana Jovanovic, Dr Mirjana Perisic, Dr Marija Mitrovic Dankulov and Ana Vranic.
According to the head of the ATLAS project team, Dr Andreja Stojic of the Institute of Physics, the project is expected to “lift on its shoulders the skies which will move science beyond the known horizons”, with its name alluding to the eponymous Greek titan.
Special focus is placed on environmental issues. Dr Stojic claims that the environment is a very complex system and that the problems and challenges lie in the quality of data, their analysis and interpretation, but also insufficient understanding of the connection between the various factors of this system. The role of artificial intelligence in the disciplines which are continuously updated with new data will be increasingly big, and Dr Stojic explains that the data pertaining to the living environment have long since acquired the “Big Data” status, but have never been treated as such.
The task of ATLAS is to strengthen the capacities for collection, analysis and interpretation of publicly available data and then provide a basis for future planning and creation of policies. As the members of the team from the Institute say, the three main goals of this project are: development of new theoretical foundations of artificial intelligence, development of a publicly available web platform which can help with research in various fields and verification of developed methods through analysis of air quality on a global level.
