Local Companies to Modernize M-84 Tank

As part of the modernization of the Serbian Armed Forces, special attention is paid to the modernization of the M-84 tank, the Ministry of Defense announced. This is the most frequently used vehicle in the SAF's units.

The Technical Repair Institute Cacak is in charge of the modernization of this tank, and by carrying out the project, it also modernizes its capacities and equipment and helps the Military-Technical Institute to realize the project.

Considering the potentials of the M-84 tank platform, the modernization is carried out in two phases – the first one entails the modernization of nine subsystems, whereas the second one entails the modernization of another 12, whereby practically all the vital subsystems are modernized with new technologies.

It is based on the development and integration of components in local capacities, with the import of the components which cannot be realized locally and their integration within the local capacities.

The zero series of M-84 tanks was built in 1984. The Ministry of Defense reminds that the tanks produced between 1988 and 1991 feature stronger engines and that armor improvements, copied from the T-72M1 tank, were implemented.
