Vladimir Smiljkovic Continuing Family Tradition – Sudbina and Vihor First Labels, Planting of Prokupac Planned as Well

The Smiljkovic family has been active in viticulture and winemaking for their own needs in the village of Drenca, near Aleksandrovac, for four generations now. Father Predrag and son Vladimir have now made a step forward into commercial production of wine. They've registered the Smiljkovic 90 winery and presented their first labels – the Sudbina white wine (Tamjanika and Italian Riesling) and the Vihor red wine (Merlot and Cabernet).

– We have five hectares of grapevine, 2.5 ha within the Smiljkovic 90 winery. The white vine varieties are Italian Riesling, Tamjanika, Chardonnay and Sauvignon in smaller amounts. The red wine varieties are Merlot, Cabernet and Frankovka – Vladimir says.

He says that, this year, they've had luck with the weather and the grapes are healthy. Still, the yields are lower than last year, whereas the percentage of sugar is satisfactory – 22.23%.



– Zupa is a God-given area for the growing of grapevine and the making of top-quality wines. It has a large number of sunny days in a year and an altitude that's ideal for the growing of grapevine, at 300 to 500 m – Smiljkovic adds for eKapija.

Everyone can taste Zupa's wines if they visit this winery.

– At the moment, the capacity of our wine sampling room is 20 people, and by the end of 2021, we will build a larger one, for up to 50 people. We offer wine tasting, wine tasting with appetizers and wine tasting with a full menu – Vladimir says.



The plans for the upcoming period are ambitious – the construction of a new wine tasting room and a barrique cellar, as well as five apartments with two beds each. They are also to orient to wine tourism.

– In the upcoming years, we also plan to plant Prokupac, our indigenous variety, on new areas – Vladimir Smiljkovic reveals.
