Energy Consulting and Engineering and LMBV International work on environmental project for new coal mine in Kovin
The Memorandum of Cooperation in the domain of environment protection within the scope of the project for construction of a coal mine in Kovin, of which reserves are estimated at 276m tons, and construction of a new steam power plant, with the capacity of about 600 MW, has been signed in the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia.
The Novi Kovin (New Kovin) project includes construction of new coal mine and steam power plant Kovin, which should be built according to all European standards, based on the principles of public and private partnership. The Electric Power Company of Serbia (EPS) opened an experimental mine for underwater coal exploitation 15 years ago, while company Energy Consulting and Engineering got the permit two years ago to do the research on the banks of the Danube. After 629 bores, the company's experts have come to the conclusion that there are 276m tons of coal on that territory, while 176m tons have been verified, which is enough for 35-year exploitation. One of the most important aspects of this project is environment protection because the protected zone - Deliblato Sands, is situated on the edge of the coal deposit, the Danube is on the other side, while numerous drinking water sources are in the vicinity.
The Memorandum of Cooperation in the domain of environment protection has been signed in the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia by Dr. Milan Radunović, the Executive Director of Energy Consulting and Engineering, and Mihael Iling, the Executive Manager of LMBV International, which is owned by the Federal Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Germany. As a leader in the recultivation and environment projection projects, the company from Germany cooperated with the Electric Power Company of Serbia in realization of many similar projects in our country. One of the goals of this project is transformation of waste coal, of which negative effects can be similar to an ecological bomb, into a commercial product for domestic and foreign market.
Dr Stojan Jevtić, the Vice-President of the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia, underlined that the resolving of ecological problems in the Danubian zone was extremely significant and that the development of energy potentials in that part of Vojvodina and Serbia was very important for their future economic and business development.
