The German authorities have approved the continuation of the works on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, by which gas from Russia should flow beneath the Baltic Sea, and whose construction has been criticized by Washington, some European countries and environmental organizations.

Washington claims that Nord Stream 2 will make Europe more dependent on Russian gas, harming its energy security.

Moscow accused the United States of trying to boost the sale of its own liquefied gas by opposing Nord Stream 2.

The works on the gas pipeline were stopped, because the Swiss company, facing the threat of U.S. sanctions, had withdrawn the ships that were engaged on the project.

The Russian state company Gazprom then sent its own ship. As it is a of a different type than the Swiss ones, it needed to be approved by the German authorities.

Gazprom claims that roughly 150 kilometers of the gas pipeline, amounting to 6% of the project, remains to be done, AP reports.
