Serbia 52nd of 113 Countries by Global Food Security Index

Serbia is 52nd among 113 countries by the Global Food Security Index (GFSI), published by the British weekly The Economist.

With the overall rating of 63.2, Serbia is only above Ukraine (54th spot) of all European countries.

Serbia’s best ranking is in the category of food accessibility, where it placed 31st, with a rating of 83.2. In the category of food quality and safety, it is 39th, and in the category of natural resources and resilience, it is 72nd.

In the category of food availability, Serbia is 99th, with an average rating of 43.9.

Compared to 2012, when the first index was published, Serbia has improved the overall rating by 9.1.

Serbia got the highest rating (100) for the programs of food safety and nutrition standards. It is also well rated when it comes to the share of the populace which is below the global poverty line (89.5), the change of average food expenditures (89), availability of micronutrients (85.9), food safety (82) and food losses (78.3).

On the other hand, for the instability of agricultural production and the meeting of obligations regarding food safety and food access policy, Serbia was given a rating of zero.

The top of the list features Finland (85.3) and Ireland (83.8), followed by the Netherlands, Austria and the Czech Republic. The USA is 11th, and Germany shares the 13th spot with New Zealand, Denmark and Italy.

Of the countries outside Europe, only Israel (8th) and Japan (9th) are within the top 10.

Yemen, Sudan and Zambia are the worst rated countries.

More than a half of the countries have reduced poverty since 2012, and some, especially in Asia, have recorded an immense progress. The biggest improvements are recorded in China, Myanmar and Indonesia.

Still, in 20 countries, poverty has increased since 2012, and the pandemic could jeopardize the successes achieved in the reduction of poverty in the past two decades.
