The secretary for environmental protection, Ivana Vilotijevic, as well as representatives of the French company Suez and the Japanese company Itochu, with which the City of Belgrade has established a public-private partnership for the purposes of said project, also attended, Beoinfo reports.
Vesic said that the old Vinca landfill had been the worst maintained municipal waste landfill in that part of Europe and that 500,000 tons of waste had been deposited there over a period of 40 years.
– In that period, four billion tons of methane gas was emitted from here into the atmosphere, polluting the environment for 40 years. Several years ago, we managed to establish this PPP and things are entirely different here now. We can now see a new, fully developed, basin-shaped landfill, behind which is a waste water treatment facility, which will now prevent waste water from harming the environment, that is, the nearby farms and the Danube river. Furthermore, there is also a construction waste processing facility here now, with a capacity of 100,000 tons, where waste material will be processed, producing the raw material for road construction – Vesic said.
He added that the new landfill would also feature a facility producing electricity from waste, whereas methane will be used for heating at the Konjarnik heating plant.
