Documentary About Best Serbian Chess Player of All Time Made

A dramatization of the famous chess game played by grandmaster Svetozar Gligoric in 1953, which will be an integral part of the documentary about Serbia’s and Yugoslavia’s best chess player of all time, titled Gligoric’s Mar del Plata – King’s Indian Variation, has just been filmed at the library of the Belgrade Observatory in Zvezdara.

Actors Radomir Nikolic and Nikola Krneta, together with mask maker Dragana Injac, brought back to life Svetozar Gligoric and Miguel Najdorf, the Film Center of Serbia announced.

The executive producer is Andrija Lucic, the feature parts are directed by Milan Todorovic, the cinematographer is Vladimir Pavic and the editor is Vladimir Markovic.

The costume designer is Jovana Bozovic. The film has already received substantial support from the Provincial Secretariat for Higher Education and Science and Research Activities.

The film’s producer, Ognjen Rakcevic, stated that the life of Svetozar Gligoric was so interesting that it couldn’t possible be contained in a single movie. To Rakcevic, the most exciting event is said chess game, played at the Mar del Plata tournament in Argentina, when Gligoric introduced a new variation to his favorite opening sitting across from his great rival Miguel Najdorf.

The variation made chess history and is still fresh, as prominent chess players continue to use it frequently, Rakcevic pointed out.
