This year’s Bitef will be held from September 13-25 at double the capacity, 54/55 per row, with 14 plays, around ten repeat performances and a rich accompanying program, the organizers announced.

The Secretary of Culture, Ivan Karl, reminded that Bitef had not been held at a full capacity the year before and that only a prologue was organized, due to the coronavirus pandemic. He pointed out that this was the reason why the 2021 edition would be held at double the capacity.

– We want to maintain the continuity, Bitef is getting closer to its 60th edition and this will allow us to fill out a gap in its history – Karl pointed out.

The artistic director of Bitef, Ivan Medenica, reminded that the slogan of the next Bitef was “At the Edge of the Future”, identical to the previous one, and that it was a continuation of the event held in 2020.

– Some of the reasons for this slogan are the environmental crisis, the climate changes, air pollution and all the accompanying problems. That is the main theme of Bitef, so the first part of the festival will be dominated by the topic of the environmental crisis all the way to posthumanism, a world in which there will be a better balance between us and the nature. That is the thematic line which leads to the artistic line as well, because, in the second part, we will be re-examining the presence of live performers onstage. There will be robots, drones, the concept of a performer will be deconstructed, questioned and dissolved through lighting effects, artificial intelligence and in other ways – Medenica said and announced 14 plays within the main competition program.

The director of the Goethe Institute, Frank Baumann, and the cultural attaché of the French Institute in Serbia, Catherine Faudry, expressed their satisfaction over being able to support Bitef 2021 and announced plays from their countries.
