The dramatic increase in the price of gas might soon affect the drivers of new diesel-powered cars, because shortages of the necessary addition AdBlue, a fluid which reduces the level of nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases, are expected. Without this addition, many passenger vehicles, but also cargo vehicles, cannot be used.

The European producers of AdBlue have reduced their production due to the high price of gas. A liter of AdBlue requires a kilogram of gas.

– All the big producers have already reduced their product to the quotas, and certain producers have fully suspended the production – points out Andreas Obereder, a wholesaler of AdBlue in Austria.

Back in September, the large German chemical concern BASF reduced its production of ammonia, which is an important ingredient in the production of AdBlue.

In October, the biggest producer of ammonia in Germany, SKW, also reduced its production, because, due to the gas prices, the production is not cost-effective.

German road transporters are already worried about the expected shortages of AdBlue.

A transporters’ association points out that 90% of freight vehicles require this product.
