Upon Reconstruction of Navigation Lock, Tisa River to be Able to Accommodate Larger Ships

The Government of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina has defined the Draft Provincial Assembly Decision on the preparation of the Spatial Plan for the special purpose dam on the Tisa.

The document creates the basis for the raising of the category of the Tisa river waterway, as determined by the Strategy of Development of Water Transport of the Republic of Serbia from 2015 to 2025, according to the website of the Government of Vojvodina. It also enables the designing and the execution of works to the end of upgrading the conditions for the bypassing of ships at the dam on the Tisa, by increasing its capacities, so as to enable a simultaneous bypassing of more than one vessel.

An integral part of the dam, built in 1977, is the navigation lock, which enables the bypassing of self-propelled vessels of the IV class, and, due to the insufficient length, the bypassing of larger vessels (convoys) is not possible. These characteristics of the navigation lock have an unfavorable effect on the transport of goods on the Tisa.

With the reconstruction of the existing navigation lock and its increase from the current 85 meters to a length of 190 meters and a width of 24 meters, or the construction of a new navigation lock with said dimensions on the other side of the dam, it would be possible to simultaneously handle a composition of vessels characteristic for the VIa waterway category and, with that, a greater utilization of the Tisa for the transportation of large amounts of goods between Serbia and Hungary.
