(the National Library of Serbia)
An agreement on the last phase of the reconstruction of the National Library of Serbia has been signed by Minister for National Investment Plan Verica Kalanovic, Minister of Culture Nebojsa Bradic and Library Director Sreten Ugricic with the contractors from Neimar Plus.
City Council members Nada Dumic and Miroslav Cuckovic attended the signing ceremony on Friday (October 8, 2010) when the agreement on continuation of the reconstruction of the National Library of Serbia was signed. That agreement envisages the completion of the reconstruction until February 28, 2011, when the Library celebrates its day.
- The value of the agreement is about 1.7 million euros, but it is essentially worth much more because the reconstruction of the National Library will be finally finished in the following period and the institution will be placed at the disposal of the citizens of Belgrade and Serbia - Minister Kalanovic pointed out.
– With this agreement, of which implementation will mean the completion of the reconstruction of this significant institution, we make sure that there are no prolongations and unexpected deadlines any more. Our task is to bring back three million users to the National Library on annual basis and to attract new ones, primarily with rich cultural contents, as well as with the standards that libraries in other European cities meet – Ms. Kalanovic announced.
Minister Bradic emphasized that it was one of the most significant projects in the domain of the renovation of our institutions, reminding that the National Library was providing a support to all libraries in Serbia and played an important role in their international networking.
City Council member Nada Dumic told Beoinfo that that part of the city was completely authentic and that it hosted the Church of St. Sava and the National Library, which was more than significant for our cultural heritage since everything ever written in Serbian language can be found in it.
According to her words, the library's capacities will be expanded by 30% upon the reconstruction, and it will also become a part of the network of the European Digital Library, which will bring us closer to achieving our aspirations of becoming a full-right member of the European Union.
She reminded that that institution, in addition to its basic role, also had a significant tourist potential for the city of Belgrade, which, as she pointed out, should definitely be used.
