The company Nicco doo from Belgrade is planning to build a unique complex for the treatment of children through hippotherapy with a horse farm, on the space of the Neuropsychiatry Clinic of the Clinic Center in Ripanj.

This clinic with 42 beds which is located in Avalska Street is currently out of function, and, according to the urban project prepared by Vemex Projekt from Belgrade and published by the City of Belgrade, the plan is to reconstruct and adapt the existing facilities and build a health facility for the accommodation and treatment of children through hippotherapy, as well as a center for multiple sclerosis, migraine and an elderly care home, all on an area of around 71 ha.

According to the project documentation, the desire of the investor is to make a unique complex in our country, a center for the treatment of neurological diseases through hippotherapy.

The hospital for the treatment of children through hippotherapy (basement and two floors, including the ground floor) will have 121 beds, and the planned horse farm will have a horseback-riding ground, that is, an open area, a closed area (arena), a stable for 24 horses, a facility for the walking of horses, an auxiliary facility for the storage of waste and straw and a smith.

The plan also includes 57 parking spaces, and 60% of the area of the complex will consist of park greenery, with the possibility of the greening of roofs and vertical greening.

Residential facilities are also located within the complex, which will keep its purpose with the current volume and dimensions.

The construction will be carried out in three phases. In the first phase, the construction of facilities for the accommodation and training of horses is planned, so that, by the time the new hospital is built and the old one revitalized, the horses would be trained for the planned purpose of treating children through hippotherapy.

In the second phase, the plan is to build a new hospital with accommodation capacities and auxiliary features for child therapy, and the third phase entails the investment and current maintenance of the existing facility of the hospital, by which it is brought back to its function.

The project points out that horses have been used for a long time as a means of improving the health and well-being of people with difficulties and for the healing of sick people.

– Hippotherapy is a special form of physical therapy on a neurophysiological basis. It is done by a physical therapist who has additional education about neuro-muscle techniques and hippotherapy – a hippotherapist. Back in 1875, the French doctor Cassaign published the first study about horseback-riding as a therapy method and concluded that it was useful in treating certain kinds of neurological conditions, in improving the posture, balance and movement, as well as in improving the psychological condition. Since then, hippotherapy has proven to be a necessary step in improving one’s health – the document says.

The location currently doesn’t feature a water supply system, sewer or power infrastructure, so the plan also includes their construction. Until the water and sewer system is built, an alternative service in the form of tanks, wells and septic tanks or facilities for the treatment of fecal waters is planned. The construction of a gas pipeline along Avalaska Street is also planned. Containers with a volume of 1,100 liters will be used for the evacuation of municipal waste.

The urban project for the construction of the horse farm for the treatment of children through hippotherapy is up for a public presentation until May 10.
