Extraordinary Tumor Operation Done in Banjica for the First Time in Serbia

An extraordinary surgical procedure has been done at the Institute for Orthopedics “Banjica” in Belgrade. A seventeen-year-old suffering from a malignant pelvis and hip tumor was operated on.

What makes this operation special is the manner in which his bone and joint were reconstructed. The endoprosthesis for this patient had been donated.

The surgical procedure was done by the clinical assistant Dr Stanislav Rajkovic, with the help of the highly trained colleagues from the Department for Orthopedic Oncology of the Banjica Institute and the assistance of Professor Lee James from Great Britain, a special guest on this occasion, providing expert help in inserting the sophisticated orthopedic implant.

Dr Rajkovic said for the RTS web portal that the operation had taken six hours and that everything had gone well.

– We expect the patient to start walking from Monday – Rajkovic said following the operation.

Operations of this type had not been done in Serbia for decades, and this was the first time one such operation was done at that level. The entire treatment is multidisciplinary and highly specialized pathologists, oncologists, radio therapists and radiologists take part in it directly.

The team of experts hopes that this operation will be an introduction into numerous operations of the same or similar kind in the future – that modern implants will become available in their everyday operations.
