Urban by Nature Hub of Southeast Europe Founded in Belgrade – Cities Unified in Exchanging Ideas and Solutions

Yesterday, at the Old Palace, the Urban by Nature Hub of Southeast Europe, which is part of The Global Program for Urban Nature Pioneers, was founded. Participants in the program are also the organizations Smart Cities, European Forum on Urban Forestry, Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), Center for Experiments and Urban Studies (CEUS), as well as the International Unions for Conservation of Nature of East Europe and Central Asia.

The mayor of Belgrade, Zoran Radojicic, pointed out that the City of Belgrade, as the biggest local self-government unit in Serbia, is the initiator of the execution and realization of measures to the end of mitigating the effects of climate change, the city administration announced.

Clive Davies of the European Forum on Urban Forestry reminded of the great importance of “grown” trees and pointed out that big, “old”, branched-out trees were the biggest part of the solution to many problems regarding ecology and climate change.

– There are numerous examples of big, quality trees doing most of the job of mitigating the effects of climate change. The example of the American city of Phoenix, located in Arizona, one of the states with the warmest climate, shows that, in certain parts of the city, where the poorest residents live, the average temperature has dropped by as many as 18 degrees compared to the period in which there were no trees – Davies said.
