The Trimo Urban Crash competition, which will stay open for less than 2 months, calls for students of architecture and design to activate their creative cells and imagine an original urban installation that will have a public purpose. The idea will become a reality by Trimo at the selected location in the residential neighborhood, Nove Fuine, in the capital of Slovenia. So far, almost 1500 interested individuals from more than 80 different countries around the world have already registered on the Trimo Urban Crash website. This is three times more than in the same period in 2008.

The invitation for entries lasts for less than 2 months, and this year’s creative task challenges students to form a public architectural installation for Nove Fužine, a residential neighborhood in Ljubljana, using Trimo materials. This installation should revive the neighborhood and at the same time offer an answer to complex architectural and social questions common to many European, urban, residential areas.

The winning solution will be built at the above-mentioned location, by Trimo, which will also reward the winner with a scholarship at the renowned school of architecture in London - Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture. In addition, all finalists will be rewarded with participation in an architectural workshop in Slovenia. This is certainly one of those opportunities that represents an excellent reference for students and starting point for their future career. The submitted entries will be judged by an international jury panel, consisting of Professors of architecture and design, practitioner architects, the creator of the last winning entry, a Trimo representative, and a representative of the Municipality of Ljubljana.

The number of registrations on the website clearly shows that the competition is very popular. The interest in this competition is growing day by day, since there are almost 1500 individuals from more than 80 different countries, registered on the Trimo Urban Crash website. Most registered students come from Poland, followed by Slovenia, Italy, Spain, Argentina, Great Britain, Mexico, and the United States.

Milos Florijancic, competition curator and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, Ljubljana, as a member of the jury panel gives this advice to everyone who wishes to register for this competition:

- They should be as up to date as possible, to be understandable to everyone, without long explanations and in the end, keeping the jury together in searching the best entry. Before picking their entries they should at least once again look at the entry to re-think and maybe reset the meaning or intentions that they wanted to present. In summary, you don’t have to work a lot on this competition entry, you have to think a lot and you have to put the thing down on paper with a light hand. The most important evaluation criteria will definitely be the power of design, honesty, and the simplicity of projects.

What is the secret to the success of the Serbian student who participated in the contest in 2007 and 2009?

Bojan Koncarevic, who is currently studying in Tokyo, received an honourable mention (jury panel award) in both competitions for his original ideas.

- Trimo Urban Crash is a very good experience to start in the field of architecture and that is why I was also taking part.

The key to success probably lies in his philosophy of creating.

- My design philosophy is to create the architecture of relationships. The designs I made for Trimo competition means a lot to put in my CV. My advice to all who want to take part is that you have to decide whether you are capable of bringing something challenging to that competition.

This concept is something that students not only wish, but also expect, claim some of the previous winners of Trimo Urban Crash competitions.

Rok Grdisa from Slovenia, competition finalist in 2007, decided to take part at the last minute.

- It was actually my last chance to take part in a student competition and I said 'why not?'. I was thinking about what I could make for that Trimo construction that will be easy to make and looks great, so I decided to just make it. The Trimo Urban Crash award means a great reference and, of course, I include it in my CV. My installation is standing in Tivoli park in Ljubljana, and this is my first building project, so its just a great thing. That is the point - that the idea has to be built. It is just a great feeling, when there were all these important people standing beside me and I was the centre of attention. I think that this is one thing that every student has to do, so I would recommend it to everybody.”

Chiara Agosti from Italy, along with Franceska Bellina, reached third place in the previous year for her idea “Collector - Engine Info Point”. She decided to participate in the contest because in it she saw a great opportunity and because she thought “that the theme or the topic of the competition was very nice”. She emphasized the importance of the summer workshop:

- I was very happy, I didn’t expect this position and I got the possibility to participate in a summer workshop. The best thing there were the people I met, because I like it very much to work with other people from other countries, because we have different ideas and it was very nice. This was an opportunity I had, which is important for my CV and work. Maybe I will compete also this year.

International competitions, such as the Trimo Urban Crash, offer both students and faculties an excellent communication channel for effectively establishing contacts, and an opportunity to share knowledge and compare different architectural approaches. Trimo aims to expand integration and collaboration within academic circles, provide different content for courses at the faculties for architecture, and encourage constructive cooperation between theory, practice, and business in various fields. Given the strong tradition of Trimo development and research department and its focus on the expertise, Trimo Urban Crash is one of their many innovative projects.

An international jury will judge the winning project in two rounds and then invite the public to the final vote. The results will be published by the end of April 2011. The winning installation will be set up by the autumn of 2011. At the opening ceremony of the installation, the students, whose projects will be put on the shortlist, will meet the jury members and take part in an architectural workshop in Ljubljana.
