Economist Joze Mencinger Dies

The famous Slovenian economist, lawyer, professor and politician Joze Mencinger has died aged 81. His death has been confirmed by the Faculty of Economics at the University of Ljubljana, SEEBiz reports.

Mencinger was born on March 5, 1941, in Jesenice. His fields of activity were macroeconomic analyses, analyses of economic systems and economic policy. In his analyses, he strove to influence the economic system, and he also shared his opinions with the public by writing for Dnevnik’s publication Objektiv.

He participated in the Slovenian government as Vice President of the Government for Economic Coordination (1990-1991), he was a member of the management of the Bank of Slovenia (1991-1997), the director of EIPF (1992-1999), a member of the National Council (2002-2007) and a member of the Fiscal Council of Slovenia (from 2008). As an expert, he also worked abroad.

In 1964 he graduated from the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana, and two years later, he got his MA at the Faculty of Economy in Belgrade. In 1975, he obtained his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania. He became an assistant professor in 1967, a docent in 1977, an associate professor in 1983 and a full-time professor in 1987 at the Department for Law and Economics Sciences of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ljubljana. He was the rector of the University in Ljubljana for two terms (1998-2005).

He also lectured at other universities, and in addition to giving lectures per invitation in nearly all European countries, he also lectured in the USA, Japan and China.

In 2001, he got the Gold Order of Freedom of Slovenia. In May 2020, he was pronounced an honorary citizen of Ljubljana.
