The deputy prime minister and minister of mining and energy of Serbia, Zorana Mihajlovic, has stated that she thinks it’s a mistake that Serbia doesn’t use lithium, because there are confirmed reserves of this critical mineral resource, and that the results of the studies of the environmental impact should have been waited for. She pointed out that environmental themes were misused for political purposes and that arguments and facts were being neglected.

– If we’re talking about lithium, the biggest problem there is that we haven’t all waited for the studies of the environmental impact. Both those who are against and who don’t even know why they’re against it and those who are in favor of it and believe in it, but don’t know whether all the data are accurate. If we had waited for the studies, we would know whether this is in line with the strictest environmental protection standards or not. We don’t have those data and, when someone starts talking again about how it’s terrible and bad, I say, let’s see the data. We don’t have to do anything ever and we won’t, because we’ve made that decision, but why shouldn’t we know? – she said.

Mihajlovic repeated that the works in the territory of the municipality of Majdanpek were being carried out in line with the inspection’s order, because the safety had been jeopardized due to the cracks in the body of the Starica mountain, the Ministry of Mining and Energy announced.

– We have commissioned a mining project, for all the steps to be made and for it to be repaired, otherwise, a part of Starica will crumble. Everybody knows that and I’ve said that we will send all the documentation of the Assembly’s Board for Environmental Protection. I am not an environmental engineer, but we do have institutions which commission such things.
