The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that a new era was beginning for Bulgaria and southeast Europe, whereas the president of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, said that the project of the gas interconnector would play an important role in strengthening the energy security of Europe. The president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, pointed out that he hoped that a similar ceremony would be held in Serbia the next year.
– President Von der Leyen has helped us a lot when it comes to the construction of the interconnector between Serbia and Bulgaria and the planned construction between Serbia and North Macedonia and that means new infrastructure for Serbia, for the whole Western Balkans – Vucic said.
He added that, following that, branches toward countries of the European Union could be built and that there would be no diversification of the gas supply sources without Azerbaijan and President Ilham Aliyev.
Vucic said that it was also a very important day for Serbia and that it was not an exaggeration.
At the beginning of the year, with the support of the EU, Serbia started building a gas interconnector with Bulgaria, Nis-Dimitrovgrad, 109 kilometers long in the territory of Serbia, and the works should be completed by September 2023.
Through this gas pipeline, Serbia will connect to the gas pipeline between Bulgaria and Greece, that is, it will get the option of getting gas supply from Azerbaijan or the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Greece.
The Ministry of Energy of Serbia earlier announced that the country would agree the renting of capacities with Azerbaijan so that, through the gas interconnection, we could have at least 1.4 billion cubic meters of gas at our disposal in 2023.
