Emerald green color, sustainability being priority, connecting with nature and furniture inspired by the styles of the previous century are some of the trends that leading international interior designers suggest for the year to come.

Online platform for sales of designer furniture, 1stDibs, has conducted the annual survey on interior design trends on the sample of 880 participants.

This comprehensive research with the goal to provide interior designers, as well as manufacturers of furniture and homeware, with inspiration and direct their ideas, indicates that sustainability in interiors and eco-design remain a priority.

Up to 94% of participants believe that sustainability will be at the top of the priority list, as well as similar concepts such as organic modernism and accentuating neutral color palettes and motives. There is also biophilia which entails designing a space that should simulate a natural environment as much as possible. This is achieved with a focus on daylight, furniture from natural fibers and indoor plants.

Inspiration from the previous century

Two out of three designers (65%) prefer custom-made over ready-made things. Artwork remains an important part of interior designs and sculptures have a slight edge over paintings (44% of subjects prefer sculptures compared to 43% that prefer paintings).

Lovers of the style of the 1980s will be pleased to hear that trends that marked this era – e.g. geometrical shapes and opulent mirrors – are coming back into fashion. There are also pastel motifs as well as fruit patterns that were a typical wall decoration in the 1950s.

Interior designers believe that the famous Eames lounge chair will have its renaissance, the one designed by Herman Miller in 1956 being hugely influential. It is expected for old classics to get a new life, like the 50s Serpentine sofa by Vladimir Kagan, Wishbone chair by Hans J. Wegner from 1949 and Barcelona chairs that the German American architect, Mies van der Rohe, designed in 1929.

Pantone red and emerald green

Pantone Color Institute has chosen Viva Magenta as the color of the year 2023. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta is a tone that descends from the red family, described by the company as “brave and fearless, pulsing color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration.”

Still, it was emerald green that dominated interior design in the past few years, and the leading world designers that participated in the 1stDibs survey said that they didn`t expect that to change. Nearly every fourth participant thought emerald green was the color of the season, followed by the calming sage green, bright orange, mustard yellow and cobalt blue.

– This is the third year in a row that emerald green is number one among colors. When a trend shows such endurance, we believe it stops being a trend and becomes a classic, says Barzilay Freund, the 1stDibs` editorial director.

Among trends that are dropping in popularity are animal prints and rose gold overlays. There is less demand for home offices which played a major role at the height of the pandemic for 66% of subjects, whereas only every third designer (32%) thinks they will be the thing to focus on in 2023.

The research can be a good indicator of trends for furniture manufacturers because it shows what they need to present to customers as well as interior designers because it helps them decide what to include in their projects. Also, it gives them the chance to have an answer prepared when clients ask for lavender-colored walls, says Barzilay Freund.

Forbes: Farewell to open plan, people want privacy

Forbes Magazine, on the other hand, writes about trends that won`t be present in 2023. One of them is maximalism, because people have finally realized that less is more and they want to simplify their lives.

Curved and cheap furniture is going out of fashion, and customers are turning to vintage pieces. Rattan has reached the height of its popularity and in the future it will be used to accentuate rather than be the main point in the interior, Forbes predicts.

The supremacy of monochromatic neutral colors such as white and gray is coming to an end because more designers are starting to bring velvety and warm neutral tones in interiors, especially in kitchens. Dark wood will replace lighter colored ones, designers believe.

Great surprise awaits the lovers of open plan spaces because people now want privacy.

Pandemic has changed the ways people design their homes and now, there`s a strong desire for privacy, says interior designer Audrey Scheck.

According to the interior designer and TV host at HGTV, Shay Holland, one of the trends that will disappear in 2023 is copying designs that disregard location.

– An apartment in the center of Los Angeles cannot look like an English house no matter how many prints that remind of London you bring into your space. You also cannot put leather furniture in a beach house and decorate it in the style of a mountain house, Holland states and adds that trends should not be followed at any cost, because trends are temporary.

Trends for offices – Employees want what they don`t have at home

As in decorating houses and apartments, sustainability will be priority in office design too, predicts Industville, the company that specializes in industrial furniture. Instead of buying cheap furniture of poor quality, employers are looking for long-lasting products, and ecological and recyclable materials.

Unlike houses, where open plan is losing in popularity, it is still very present in office spaces because it facilitates cooperation and communication between employees. Bringing natural elements into interiors, not only plants, which is the first thing everyone thinks of, but also natural lighting, sounds and natural scents has become a very important part of not only office design but of home design as well.

The next year will focus on flexible interiors which enable employees to freely move around the office and choose areas for work that best suit their changing needs during the day. Those include shared spaces for work and spaces for quiet, independent work as well as playrooms, break rooms and cafeterias.

– The key thing is to create a the sense of belonging with a specific office design, thus boosting creativity and positive atmosphere, says Marketa Rypacek, the Managing Director at Industville.

The trend that will persist in 2023 is related to technology. Spaces for video conferences with superb audio and visual accessories are a must in a modern office.

When the employees are in the office, they expect that thing that`s missing when they`re working from home. That is why we are waiting for the development of dynamic work places and the combination of benches, booths and private areas, notes Industville.
