The Provincial Secretariat for Urban Planning and Environmental Protection has notified the public that approval has been given to the environmental impact assessment study of the project of the underwater exploitation of coal and overburden in the part of fields A and B of the Kovin site.

The request for deciding on the necessity of the environmental impact assessment study of this project was filed by Energetski kompleks doo Beograd.

As eKapija has written before, this is the Novi Kovin project, which was announced over a decade ago, and which entails the expansion of the coal mine in the municipality of Kovin, where coal has been excavated from the Danube since 1995 using a method of underwater exploitation that is unique in the world.

Underwater exploitation of 3 million tons of lignite a year is planned.
