Roaming Charges Between EU and Serbia, BiH and North Macedonia Soon to Be Lifted

Bojan Glavasevic, a member of the Croatian parliament, announced on Twitter that the agreement on roaming charges should come into effect this year, according to which we will be able to communicate with each other at the same prices we pay in our states.

That means that all mobile calls and internet use on mobile phones in the Western Balkans and the EU will be paid at the same prices that we pay in our parent states. The same rule, let us remind, has been in effect between the EU member states for some time now.

Glavasevic said that the idea has existed for a long time, but that it is now close to being realized.

– An assembly for European affairs was held at the parliament today, where state secretary Andreja Metelko Zgombic said that the main agreement had already been signed, but that several smaller agreements needed to be signed as well. When asked when it might come into effect, she said – this year – Glavasevic told Croatian media, adding that the political will for one such agreement had existed for a long time.

According to him, the agreement should include all the Western Balkans countries (BiH, Serbia, North Macedonia…) which are involved in the process of accession to the EU in any capacity.

– It’s part of the wider idea of the accession process. Efforts toward it date back to the time when Croatia presided over the European Union. The idea was to create a modified accession process, that is, that when countries meet certain criteria, their citizens can already enjoy some benefits even before joining the Union – Glavasevic said.

When asked which prices the agreement would pertain to, that is, whether it would pertain to both phone calls and internet traffic, Glavasevic gave an affirmative answer.

– However, there will also be a protection clause, which will prevent, for example, somebody from Croatia subscribing in Serbia and then paying lower, dumping prices – Glavasevic said.
