As Euronews Srbija reported, many citizens who have bought coffee and other beverages and food throughout Serbia in the past months have lost money, because the machines would not give them their change back.
One company which installs these vending machines has recommended its users to pay the exact amount, because there’s a possibility of the machine not giving them their change back. As they said, “there is a shortage and a hindered supply of coins of 5, 10 and 20 dinars”.
The problem, as the sources of Euronews Srbija say, is that the NBS has not been putting new 10 and 20 dinar coins into circulation for nearly ten years, so their quantities are limited, which increases the demand for minted money of smaller denominations.
It is precisely these quantities that the NBS is to replenish by putting the new quantities of coins of 1, 2 and 5 dinars into circulation. The central bank says that they didn’t decide to mint coins of 10 and 20 dinars this time either, because it doesn’t pay off for them due to the prices of metal.
