The company Serbian Railways Infrastructure has commissioned the preparation of a technical study of the development of the Belgrade Rail Hub.

The study needs to be prepared for the part of the rail network bordered by the terminals of the BG Voz lines, that is, the Mladenovac, Lazarevac, Batajnica and Ovca stations.

According to the tender, the study is required for the preparation of all further planning and technical documentation in the area of the City of Belgrade, and the main goal is to establish an efficient rail system as part of the single passenger transport system in the territory of the City of Belgrade.

– The very long time period that has passed since the beginning of the construction of the new Belgrade hub (1974) has led to considerable changes in the urban planning composition of the city, the number of residents, transportation needs, traffic technologies and economic aspects of the traffic – the tendering documentation says.

It is also added that the unclearly defined status and responsibilities of the PUE Metro i voz have not secured the environment for the development of a subsystem of the public urban and suburban transport system in Belgrade.

– According to the new concept, the reconstruction and adaptation of the existing rail infrastructure and the development of a new one need to be planned, with a special focus on connecting the two most powerful rail subsystems, the railway and the subway – the task specification emphasizes.

It is added that a proposition of a solution of the optimal connecting of the future stations of all three lines of the subway system with the stations on the public rail infrastructure needs to be provided, with a proposition of the locations of the shared layover stations and preliminary designs.

The example of connecting the existing rail station Belgrade Center and the future subway station Sajam, the Karadjordje Park stop and the Karadjordje Park subway station, and so on, has been given.

For the railways in the Belgrade hub, the study will show the current scope of the transport of passengers and goods and project the expected scope for the next 20 years.

According to the currently available data, the total traffic of goods within the Belgrade Rail Hub amounted to 1,606,441 tons in 2014, whereas, in 2017, it amounted to 751,000 tons.

At the same time, 1,194,469 transported passengers were recorded in 2014, whereas the number in 2017 amounted to 925,344, and the share of the rail subsystem in the public transport of passengers is only around 1%.

Within the study, a proposition for connecting the Nikola Tesla Airport and the future National Stadium, and of Obrenovac with the railways in the hub, will be provided.

From the aspect of the city rail system (BG Voz), it is said, train traffic needs to be planned as such:

– Batajnica-Ovca, each 10 minutes during the peak hour and each 15 minutes outside the peak hour;
– Resnik-Belgrade Center, each 15 minutes during the peak hour and each 30 minutes outside the peak hour;
– Makis-Karaburma, each 15 minutes during the peak hour and each 30 minutes outside the peak hour.

For the railways from the Nikola Tesla Airport and the National Stadium, as well as for the trains on the Mladenovac-Belgrade Center, Lazarevac-Belgrade Center and Obrenovac-Belgrade routes, the schedule will be adapted to the needs of these facilities and locations.

Also, for the proposed lines, the required number of vehicles will need to be defined, as well as the location of the future depot for the vehicles within the BG Voz system, the documentation says.

Furthermore, the study will also test the possibilities of introducing trains on the Belgrade Center-Pancevo and Belgrade Center-Stara Pazova routes.

For the proposed concept of the organization of the Belgrade Rail Hub, it is necessary to provide an action plan with an estimate of the investments and the dynamics of realization.

The tender for the preparation of the study is open until May 15.
