Sapic Announces Purchase of 500 New Buses and 100 Each of Trams and Trolleys – New Mobile Phone App by End-June as Well

The mayor of Belgrade, Aleksandar Sapic, has announced the purchase of 500 new buses and 100 each of trams and trolleys, Beoinfo reported.

As he emphasized, for the first time after twelve years, the money collected from public transit fares will be returned to the city, which will enable the purchase of new vehicles.

– Finally, all the money is to be paid to the accounts of the City of Belgrade, and not those of private companies, as has been the case so far, so that opens the possibility of negotiating about the purchase of new vehicles as soon as this summer. The idea is to buy 500 buses and 100 each of trams and trolleys. If we manage to do so, within two to three years, we will practically renew our entire rolling stock, so I’m asking the citizens for some patience – Sapic pointed out.

As he added, by the end of June, the mobile phone app for the new public transit system will start operating.

– This will practically mean that the citizens will pay their tickets that way, while at the same time being able to get the information about where the vehicle they need is located – Sapic stated for Beoinfo.

– Paying for tickets by sending text messages has worked from day one, paper tickets can be bought only at the GSP offices at the moment, and by the end of summer, they will be available at 80% of the kiosks at the public stands in the city – the mayor said.

As he clarified, regardless of when the monthly ticket is bought, it is valid for the next thirty days. He cited the example of a ticket bought on May 15, which remains valid until June 15, which means that they are not bound to the calendar month. This pertains to the tickets bought through text messages, and those bought through companies are still valid for the current month for which they were bought.

– Based on the app, through GPS, we will be able to get the information about where the vehicle is located. At the same time, with this app, you will be able to pay the ticket, either through a credit card or through a text message. Once that is in place, we will be able to say that we have rounded out the new public transit ticket payment system – the mayor said.
