Preparation of Green Infrastructure Strategy of City of Belgrade to Begin

The Secretariat for Environmental Protection has announced that the preparation of the strategy for green infrastructure of the City of Belgrade is to begin. The project of the preparation is carried out by the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Belgrade.

According to the definition of the European Commission, green infrastructure is a strategically planned network of natural areas and areas close to nature, designed and maintained so that it enables the functioning of a wide range of ecosystem services. Considering the increasing importance of a green infrastructure approach in the sustainable development of urban areas, especially from the aspect of adapting to climate change, reducing air pollution, preserving biodiversity and improving the quality of life in cities, the Secretariat for Environmental Protection believes that the green infrastructure problem should be approached strategically, multidisciplinary and integrally.

The strategy will overview all the aspects of the spatial, environmental and institutional elements of the green infrastructure and their valuing through the prism of the ecosystem service in order to ensure their protection and improvement through the context of planning, designing, construction and maintenance. The strategy will be based on the existing strategic and planning documents and projects relevant to this field.

As an integral part, an auction plan will also be prepared, which will contain the measures and activities for achieving the goals of the strategy, Beoinfo reported.

The Secretariat for Environmental Protection wants to secure a wider participation of the interested parties and thereby introduce full objectivity and transparency in the process of the preparation of this document. To that end, the forming of a work group which will consist of representatives of the City Administration of the City of Belgrade, the economy, expert and science community, civil society, as well as other interested parties, is planned. The main task of the members of the work group will be to actively take part in preparing public policy documents in all phases of the preparation of the draft document.

Civil society organizations and other interested members of the public with experience and expertise in the field of green infrastructure are invited to apply for taking part in the process of the preparation of the strategy at the email address [email protected] until August 5, 2023.
