Prime Minister Ana Brnabic, who opened this facility in the presence of Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesic, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Group for Europe Saverio Mayer and General Manager of Smurfit Kappa doo Milan Markovic, emphasized that that day was an important day for the protection of the environment, both in Belgrade and throughout Serbia, because it represented a turning point in the fight for a cleaner environment and more sustainable development of Serbia.
She explained that this first facility would purify water from the Danube, used for industrial purposes, with biological treatment and return it to the river in a cleaner state than the one in which it had been taken from the river, as announced on the website of the Government of Serbia.

The Prime Minister pointed out that Smurfit Kappa was an example for all businessmen in Serbia and noted that just the planning of such facilities took time and that it was therefore necessary for businessmen to commence such projects as soon as possible. She reminded that by December 31, 2025, all business entities in Serbia that have waste water from technological production processes must build facilities for their purification. Brnabic presented that, along with the protection and improvement of air quality and solid waste storage, one of the basic priorities in Serbia was the treatment of waste water.
According to her, the Government of Serbia had allocated slightly more than EUR 4.5 billion for wastewater treatment projects in the country, EUR 1 billion of which was intended for projects in Belgrade.
Mayer said that the opening of this modern facility represented dedication to a sustainable use of waters, adding that Smurfit Kappa was the first company to bring this kind of an innovate system of water treatment to Serbia, as part of the continuous investments in sustainable production and products.
