The International Intrigue newsletter, founded by two former Australian diplomats, has published unofficial information that Serbia is at the top of the list of candidates for hosting the global climate conference COP next year, Biznis.rs has learned through the insight into the commentary published within the analysis of the events at the most recent COP in Dubai.

– According to the rules, it is an eastern European country’s turn to organize that global event, and Serbia is apparently the only country that both Russia and the EU find acceptable – announced Helen Zhang, a co-founder of International Intrigue, in the daily news overview that this information startup shares with nearly 10 million subscribers worldwide.

The selection of the country-host of the next COP is in progress, and it is known that Bulgaria, Azerbaijan and Armenia have applied.

The sources of Biznis.rs didn’t want to either confirm or deny the shortlisting for COP 29, or to reveal whether Serbia has officially applied to be the host, but one of them estimated that the shortlisting, if true, would be “a fantastic piece of information”.

– The negotiators are telling me that they are overwhelmed with the scope and the complexity of the job at this year’s COP, including the logistics which accompanied the record 100,000 registered users – Zhang wrote in the COP 28 Corner section on International Intrigue.

She estimates that the UAE, as this year’s host of COP 28, have managed to invest an incredible amount of money and resources in that “challenge”.

– I am not the only one who is wondering how Serbia and other smaller players can follow that example – wrote Zhang, an Australian who has served in Tel Aviv, Israel and Hong Kong in her diplomatic career, dealing with political and economic questions such as the fight against terrorism, information operations and free trade, according to her biography.

Together with her colleague John Fowler, another former Australian diplomat, Zhang founded the media-tech startup, whose daily newsletter has attracted nearly 10 million subscribers in a year.

Intrigue Media, the publisher of the International Intrigue newsletter, collected an investment of USD 1.75 million in November, in a round headed by Autumn Road Capital.

– At Intrigue Media, we are fiercely focused on helping global leaders and curious global citizens understand what’s going on in the world and why it’s important for them – the founders say on their portal and announce that they will soon offer a newsletter in Spanish as well, for around 500 million potential users worldwide belonging to the Spanish-speaking world.
