The investments that the Port Administration of Rijeka is carrying out or planning through a range of projects will, in a few years, fully change the look of the city from the sea, but also turn Rijeka into the port hub for the container transport of goods in the Adriatic, which is the title that now belongs to Kopar and Trieste, the Vecernji List daily writes in Friday’s issue.

With the construction of the new infrastructure, from the recently opened, new traffic route, the most expensive one in Croatia, worth over EUR 60 million, D403, which bypasses the city and reaches the seaside from the highway, through the construction of a railroad in the port area, with the expansion of the capacities of container cargo handling, the biggest cargo ships which sail the seas of the world will be able to dock in Rijeka.

One of the big strategic state projects carried out in the field is the Rijeka Gateway project, a community of suppliers which is part of the group of the world-known company Maersk, and which dictate world trends in shipping and container transport. They will invest over EUR 400 million in the Port of Rijeka, said the director of the Port Administration, and employ as many as 300 people through a concession, within which the new terminal is to be developed.

The project of the new container terminal Zagreb Deep Sea is the biggest capital project of the Port Administration of Rijeka, which is to be built in two phases. The completion of the works on the new container terminal at the Zagreb Terminal is also the completion of the all-encompassing project of the renewal of the Rijeka traffic route, known as the Rijeka Gateway project.

– That new terminal will be completed in the middle of next year and it will increase the traffic at the port in the first year of its operations already, so, in 2025, from 500,000 container units at the terminal, which is five million tons of new cargo. The current traffic at the port is 14 million tons, so we are growing by another five million. Now the cargo is delivered to ports in the north Adriatic, in Kopar and Trieste – says Denis Vukorepa, the director of the Port Administration of Rijeka.
