The construction site of the Belgrade-Zrenjanin highway has been opened in the location of the settlement of Jabucki Rit, not far from the capital city, as announced on the website of the Zrenjanin local self-government, and as they say, the construction site is accessible only by the local road from the Kovilovo settlement at the moment. The construction site is located around 8 kilometers east to the current main road Belgrade-Zrenjanin.

The preparatory works on the tracing of the first section of the future traffic route, marked in the new categorization of the state roads of Serbia as Highway A6 (Novi Sad-Zrenjanin-Belgrade) and the first highway in the territory of Banat, are in progress, and that section begins at the north tangent around Belgrade and goes toward the territory of the City of Pancevo and the Municipalities of Opovo and Kovacica.

There are over thirty construction machines, vehicles and pieces of mechanization at the site, and the works are expected to gather speed with the first days of spring. The contractor is the Chinese company Shandong Hi Speed Group.

As pointed out at the opening of the construction site and the beginning of the works, the Belgrade-Zrenjanin-Novi Sad highway will be 105.4 kilometers long, of which the Belgrade-Zrenjanin section is 67.7 kilometers long, whereas the Zrenjanin-Novi Sad section is 37.7 kilometers long.

The construction of four big bridges is planned on the highway route (two bridges on the Tamis, a bridge on the Begej and a bridge on the Tisa), as well as four bridges over the canals and road passes, as well as over the rail crossings, 20 overpasses, seven underpasses and 47 culverts.

This traffic route will enable traveling safely from Zrenjanin to Belgrade in half an hour, and from Zrenjanin to Novi Sad in 15-20 minutes, with a planned speed of 130 km/h.

Also, during the recent meeting with the mayor of Zrenjanin, Simo Salapura, the representatives of the contractor expressed the wish for another construction site to be opened near Zrenjanin, that is, for works to be done simultaneously from both directions – Belgrade and Zrenjanin.

Let us remind that the highway of around 105 kilometers is planned to connect Belgrade, Pancevo, Zrenjanin and Novi Sad and the municipalities of Opovo, Kovacica and Zabalj and this traffic route is supposed to be completed in five years.

The construction of the Belgrade-Zrenjanin-Novi Sad highway, which has been pronounced a project of special importance of the Republic of Serbia, was first announced for 2019, then for 2020, then for 2021, and then for February 2022. The minister of construction, transport and infrastructure of Serbia, Goran Vesic, announced at the beginning of 2023 that the construction would start in 2024.

In early 2020, the Memorandum of Understanding and the Preparation of the Planning and Technical Documentation for the Construction of the Belgrade (Borca)-Zrenjanina-Novi Sad Highway was signed with China Shandong International Economic and Technical Cooperation Group.
