The minister of mining and energy of Serbia, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, talked to the chairman of the Greek Copelouzos Group, Dimitris Copelouzos, about cooperation in the field of renewable energy sources (RES), as well as the supply of natural gas, the ministry announced.

The main topic of the meeting was getting to know the project of the electrical energy interconnection Egypt-Greece (GREGY), which aims to connect these two countries by an undersea cable of 950 kilometers, so as to enable the production and transfer of green energy to EU states.

– Serbia has accepted the vision of the EU in the fields of energy and climate, and with our strategic documents, we have set our path in energy transition, which is supposed to secure a balance between the interests for energy security and independence and for the reduction of the emission of harmful gases, through an increase of the share of RES in the energy mix – Djedovic said.

She added that the goal of Serbia was to have a 45% share of RES in the production of electrical energy by 2030, which entails considerable investments in new production capacities.

The visit of the chairman of Copelouzos Group took place after the recently held Serbia-Greece Business Forum, which was attended by the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, and the prime minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and at which a mutual interest in a further improvement of the economic relations of the two countries was expressed.

Copelouzos said that the GREGY project envisaged a total of 9.5 GW from wind farms and solar power plants in the territory of Egypt and an undersea cable of 3,000 MW which would enable the transfer of the produced green energy from Egypt to Greece and farther, to other European countries.

At the meeting, which was also attended by Kostis Sifnaios, the managing director of the Greek company Gastrade, there was also talk about Serbia’s plans for the diversification of the supply of natural gas, which included the use of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Alexandroupolis, which should become operational in spring.
