The preparation of the strategy of the management of mineral and other geological resources of the Republic of Serbia, for the period from 2025 till 2040, with a projection until 2050, should be completed in the next nine months and be ready for adoption, pointed out the minister of mining and energy of Serbia, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, who presided over the first meeting about the preparation of this strategy.

Djedovic Handanovic said that Serbia was a country which had based its development on mining in the past and which didn’t have a valid strategy in that field.

– This strategy is a document which is supposed to analyze, in an all-encompassing way, the state of all the mineral resources we have and provide an overview of where we are today and where we want to be. The strategy is supposed to show how to best manage our mineral resources, so that we have the most benefit to the economic growth, with the least amount of a harmful impact on the environment. In this process, the word of the experts is supposed to be decisive – emphasized Djedovic Handanovic.

The representatives of the Faculty of Mining and Geology emphasized that over 50 professors and associates from that faculty would be involved in the preparation of the draft strategy. They explained that, by analyzing all the aspects of the situation and the possibilities of the development of the mining sector, the strategy would look at the European and global practice at that time and the highest standard regarding technological solutions and sustainable mining models.

Through the process of the preparation of the strategy, the experts of the Faculty of Mining and Geology will especially point to the solutions in the existing legislative framework that need to be upgraded, considering that amendments to the Law on Mining and Geological Explorations are planned as well.

A special part of the strategy will be dedicated to issues regarding environmental protection, which will also be developed through a report on the strategic assessment of the environmental impact of the strategy.
