Serbia is interested in getting four small modular reactors, which will replace 250 MW, but there is the problem of their financing, said the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, at the global Nuclear Energy Summit, which is held in Brussels.

He said that Serbia had three problems regarding nuclear energy.

– The first one, at least in my country, we don’t have the necessary knowledge about the use of nuclear energy and we don’t know how to get that knowledge and those people. The second one is how to finance those projects and I can tell you that we are interested in getting four small modular reactors which will replace 250 MW. I don’t know how we will finance that, because it’s EUR 7.5 billion. In any case, we will be ready to participate, but we have to get some kind of support from the leading EU states. Thirdly, we will always need to change the attitude of our people. That’s not simple, but we are ready to do so. It doesn’t just mean that we will have to adapt, but also change. To change our legislative framework and we will do so. And if we continue to have a range of terrible security situations, meaning various types of wars in the world, my question is who will finance this, how we will secure bigger growth rates and how we will produce more military equipment than we have done before – said Vucic.

He said that the summit was of importance for the future of Serbia.

– We can’t learn a lot from Serbia when it comes to these questions, because, after the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia, we didn’t have any experiences with nuclear energy, but I believe that this summit is of true importance for the future of my country, as well as for the future of the entire European continent and, what’s even more important, it is much more important than many other forums that we have attended so far, and which have been organized in a bureaucratic manner just so that we could see each other – stated Vucic.
