Vucic Announces Construction of National Track and Field Stadium by 2027

The president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, announced new investments in athletics during his conversation with the president of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, in Belgrade, including the construction of a national track and field stadium, which, according to him, should be completed in 2027, announced the Athletics Federation of Serbia.

Ahead of the World Athletics Cross Country Championship in Belgrade, Vucic organized a reception for the highest delegation of world and European athletics and talked to Coe, the president of European Athletics, Dobromir Karamarinov, the president of the Athletics Federation of Serbia, Veselin Jevrosimovic, and the director of the Federation, Slobodan Brankovic.

A wide range of questions regarding the future of “the queen of sports” and its further development in Serbia was opened at the meeting. They looked back on the past tournaments that both Serbia and the whole world of athletics were proud of, both the European Athletics Indoor Championship in 2017 and the World Athletics Indoor Championship, which was held in 2022 in the Belgrade Arena and rated as the best indoor athletics tournament in history.

– I am happy that I can welcome you ahead of this big tournament tomorrow. There will be plenty more investments in athletics and I believe that we will be repaid through a good and healthy spirit. Thank you for always gladly coming to our country and showing respect toward our country. Thank you once again – said Vucic.

In his conversation with Karamarinov, Vucic promised that the works on the national track and field stadium would begin by the end of 2024, and the works are expected to be completed in 2027, when Serbia will be able to apply for world and European outdoor championships.

– Serbia is a country of sports, but also a country that is a great host to all sports workers and friends of sports on the planet. Our hospitability is famous and the whole world of sports is talking about it. In athletics, we are seen as a favorite destination, so it’s no wonder that, at the World Athetics Cross Country Championship, we will have world-famous athletes, Olympic champions, and watch them fight for new medals that they will take precisely from our capital city. No country in the region has had such support from the government in the field of sports and athletics as our country and we are endlessly grateful for everything that has been done to president Vucic and all the people from his team who stand behind us and our fight for the expansion and prosperity of Serbia athletics, which is greatly respected worldwide – said Slobodan Brankovic.
