EUR 40 million has been secured for the energy repair of 26 of the 56 buildings of the central authorities, among which is the Palace of Serbia, and those works should be completed by 2027, pointed out the minister of mining and energy of Serbia, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, and this energy efficiency project, as she reminded, was marked by the beginning of the works at the Institute for the Improvement of Education and Child Rearing in Belgrade.

Among the first facilities to be repaired, as she specified, are also the Institute for Intellectual Property, the Directorate for Measures and Precious Metals, the Agricultural Land Administration, the National Council for Coordination of Cooperation with Russia and China, as well as the buildings of the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government and the Ministry of Mining and Energy.

The “Energy Efficiency in Central Authorities Buildings” project will be realized in cooperation with the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) and the UNDP. Djedovic Handanovic expressed gratitude to the partners from the European Union which had supported the realization of the project through grants, among which are Spain and Slovakia.

– After the works are completed, the Institute for the Improvement of Education and Child Rearing will save around EUR 10,000 annually on bills, and the consumption of energy and the emission of carbon-dioxide will be halved, and they will have an energy-renewed building as soon as this autumn. The increase of the energy efficiency of public buildings is important to our health and environment, but also for the budget, because it reduces electricity and heating bills – the minister said.

According to her, the energy saving which will be achieved is equivalent, for example, to an annual consumption of electrical energy of all the residents in the municipality of Sokobanja.

The UNDP resident representative in the Republic of Serbia, Yakup Beris, said that, if all the public facilities in Serbia were reconstructed, one thermal power plant would become obsolete and that that was why it was important to continue their energy repair through financing from loans, public-private partnerships and public funds.

The deputy head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, Plamena Halacheva, pointed out that energy efficiency was an important element in fighting climate change. Halacheva said that the EU had secured around EUR 150 million in grants for the renovation of public buildings in Serbia up till then and emphasized that the focus was on buildings in the education, health and social sectors.
