The Regional Waste Management Center, in addition to Novi Sad, will also encompass the municipalities of Backa Palanka, Backi Petrovac, Beocin, Zabalj, Srbobran, Temerin and Vrbas.
The project will be financed by the European Union with EUR 60 million and the Republic of Serbia with EUR 40 million, as stated in March this year by the member of the City Council for property and environmental protection, Mira Radenovic Bojic.
The application deadline is September 5, and more details can be found HERE.
As announced earlier, this Regional Center should start working in 2026. The system of regional waste management entails enabling all the households and companies to carry out the primary selection of waste by securing two baskets and containers for each one for “dry” and “wet” waste. “Dry” waste entails plastic, paper, cardboard and similar recyclable matters, whereas “wet” waste entails biodegradable waste. Along with these two, a special separation of glass will be enabled as well.
In addition to that, all the municipalities have to build recycling yards, Novi Sad as many as three, where the citizens can dispose of all types of waste to the specially designated areas by themselves. Recently, at the City Landfill in Novi Sad, the first of the three planned recycling yards was opened. The citizens will be able to bring cardboard, plastic, aluminum and similar matters to this location, but also waste like tires, car batteries and batteries.
Two transfer stations are also planned and will be located in Backa Palanka and Vrbas, and the waste collected from the area will be transported from them to the regional landfill in Novi Sad.
The regional landfill itself should have a line for the secondary separation of waste, and then also the composting facility for “green waste” and, finally, the mechanical-biological treatment and bio-drying, while a recycling yard for construction waste is already being built. On the other hand, the landfill would put fuel (for cement plants), recycled metal, glass, plastic and paper and compost on the market.
At the end of last year, the City of Novi Sad and the seven neighboring facilities founded a new public utility enterprise whose job would be to manage the future regional landfill.
