Pumpkin seed oil from Banat ready for Chinese market

Pumpkin seed oil from the Cucurbita pumpkin, known as the “Olga” brand in Novo Milosevo in Banat, produced by the company JSO, is sold in the markets of Croatia, Montenegro and Bulgaria, and JSO now has great expectations grom the export of its oil to China as well.

The company buys the Cucurbita pumpkin seeds from Austria, where pumpkin seed oil is eaten with vanilla ice cream. In Serbia, consumers use pumpkin seed oil in salads, with soft white cheeses and meats with more fat, like pork, and they can buy it in all well-supplied markets.

– Our consumers know about pumpkin seed oil and eat it, so pumpkin seed oil is not a new product for them – the manager of international sales in JSO, Aleksandar Boskovic, said for Dnevnik and added that the company specialized in the production of pumpkin seed oil, but that they also produced pumpkin seed butter and pumpkin protein extracted from the seeds, among other products.

JSO expects a lot from the penetration of the Chinese market, but the export has only just been launched and that is why it is still too early to talk about that business endeavor.

– A million bottles of pumpkin seed oil are produced each year at our facility, but there are also other foodstuffs we produce on a large scale, so I believe that, along with the pumpkin seed oil, in the coming period, our other products will also become available in the enormous Chinese market and interest the Chinese consumers – pointed out Boskovic.

In the local market, another three companies do the same job and they could prove to be their competition. There are another three, smaller ones, which are not competition to them.

The company has 800 hectares of arable land in Novo Milosevo. It grows the Cucurbita pumpkin on a third of that area.

– Due to the Ph value of the soil, because the Cucurbita pumpkin extracts the nutrients from the soil, we can’t constantly grow pumpkins in the same place. Instead, we change the parcels on which the oil pumpkin is grown – Boskovic explained and added that they were also interested in cooperating with agricultural properties in the area and beyond, especially if the Chinese market showed an interest in products made from the Cucurbita pumpkin. – We have a fully rounded production process. In eight hours, we can pick the pumpkins, transport, wash, dry, pack and store the seeds and thereby fully preserve even the minutest nutrient that the seeds of the Cucurbita pumpkin contain.

Better fair this year

During the recent Agricultural Fair in Novi Sad, JSO had plenty of business contacts with local and foreign partners interested in cooperation.

– This year’s fair was better for us than last year’s one, there were more business contacts that can grow into serious contracts. There were more visitors too, they spent time at our stand and bought our products – said the manager of international sales of JSO, Aleksandar Boskovic.
