The production of energy from waste which is collected in the territories of 15 Belgrade municipalities officially began on July 1 at the Thermal Power Plant-Heating Plant Vinca. The full scope of services is secured in accordance with the Public-Private-Partnership contract with the City of Belgrade concerning waste management, the company Beo cista energija announced.
Beo cista energija, together with Belgrade’s Secretariat for Environmental Protection, utilized non-recourse credit facility provided by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Development Bank of Austria (OeEB) and built various new facilities including Energy-from-Waste facility, intended to provide communal services for waste management, treatment, recovery and disposal.
– Recovery of green electrical and thermal energy by treating up to 340,000 tons/year (43,6 t/hr.) of communal waste in Energy-from-Waste facility will supply electricity to 5% and heat to 10% of households in Belgrade. Additionally, waste treatment will substantially reduce waste landfilling, which coupled with the collection and treatment of all leachate from the landfills, and recovery of construction materials from construction and demolition waste, will contribute to tangible improvement of the environmental conditions in Belgrade and the reduction of CO2 emissions in the amount of 210,000 tons CO2eq/year – Beo cista says.
From July 1, 2024, all facilities are operated and maintained by Veolia expert teams under a 25-year operation and maintenance contract, the press release says.
Beo cista energija, the Special Purpose Vehicle company, was established by Itochu Corporation, Veolia Group and Marguerite, a pan-European infrastructure investor.
