Nis to get center for creative industries within its fortress

The project of the reconstruction of the art studios and the former casemates, which will be turned into a center for creative industries, is in progress at the Nis Fortress. This project is supported by the European Union through the EU PRO Plus program, in cooperation with the Ministry of European Integration, and it encompasses the territory of the city of Nis and the municipalities of Svrljig, Merosina and Gadzin Han.

The project, worth EUR 1 million, envisages the revitalization and activization of the art studios and the former casemates at the Nis Fortress, whereby this historical monument will be preserved and whereby its longevity will be secured, according to the website of the ministry.

In addition to that, the initiative aims to promote the rich cultural heritage of the region through the transformation of the Nis Fortress into a center of creative industries, traditional crafts and artists, who will be able to produce and place their works here.

While visiting the site, minister Tanja Miscevic stated that, when money had been awarded to this project in June, the beginning of joint work with the City of Nis and the EU had in fact been supported, toward the reconstruction of the Nis Fortress in a way that would turn its interior spaces into a modern center for creative industries, the kind whose influence would extend beyond the local environment.

– We want the end goal to also be for the public spaces in the cities encompassed by the project to be reconstructed, so that we would protect the cultural heritage, but in a way which would give it a new role in promoting the heritage, having it be available to over 50,000 citizens of these municipalities, and especially young people, so that they can express and show their creativity – emphasized Miscevic.
