JICA team at locations of future PSHPP Bistrica

The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has started the analysis and assessment of the project of the hydropower plant Bistrica which precedes the adoption of a positive decision for the start of negotiations on financing conditions. In the initial phase, the JICA team is visiting Serbia together with representatives of Elektroprivreda Srbije and the Ministry of Mining and Energy to see the locations where the facilities of the future pump-of-storage hydropower plant are planned, announced Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS).

In the preparatory phase, during this year, the Conceptual Design, Feasibility Study and Draft Environmental Impact Assessment Study were completed, and the Spatial Plan of the Special Purpose Area was also adopted, recalled Aleksandar Jakovljević, Executive Director for Investments and Development of Elektroprivreda Srbije.

– According to previous analyses, PSHPP “Bistrica” will be a flexible energy generation capacity, which, in addition to its own reservoir, will have the possibility to use additional water potential from the lake of Uvački, Zlatarski and Radoinjski reservoirs, which would improve the use of the cascade of Drinsko-Limske power plants. In addition to balancing and storage capacity, it will also have an impact on the financial aspect of EPS as well, through increased flexibility and through services with a growing market-demand in the future, and which will provide the company a new commercial benefit in business – said Jakovljević.

He emphasized that the new energy capacity of 656 MW will play an extremely significant role in improving Serbia's energy stability, energy balancing and storage, as well as in the integration of new renewable energy sources.

PSHPP Bistrica was recognized as a priority project in the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan adopted by the Government of Serbia, as well as in the new Energy Development Strategy, which should be adopted soon, EPS reminds in its press release.
