Experts oppose GMO imports
Serbia should not give in to the demands of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to allow the import of genetically modified products and seeds (GMO) because it would have a detrimental effect on citizens' health and endanger domestic manufacturers and resources, experts assessed in their statements to Tanjug news agency.
Serbia has preserved land, water and air, and it should grow domestic sorts and hybrids as well as cattle breeds that are not genetically modified, Director of the Institute of Agricultural Economics Drago Cvijanovic pointed out.
Director Cvijanovic underlined that certain parcels in Serbia were "virgin clean because no artificial fertilizer and protective means have ever been used on them."
Cvijanovic stressed that Serbia should not give in to the demands of the WTO or any other regional or global organization that makes a membership conditional on the approval of GMO imports.
- It is necessary to protect domestic sorts, hybrids and the breeds of domestic animals and strictly control the import of seeds and all agricultural and food products - said Cvijanovic.
