Agreement on Kuwaiti loan for Prokop to be signed on December 10th - Construction continues in spring 2013
On December 10th, the governments of Serbia and Kuwait will sign an agreement on a EUR 28 million loan for the continuation of the construction of the Belgrade railway station Prokop. After a long break, construction of Prokop will be resumed in spring 2013, said Transportation Minister Milutin Mrkonjic.
- This agreement will make it possible to build a very important part of the railway station Prokop and to finish the passenger transportation segment - the minister noted.
According to Mrkonjic, Prokop will start operating at full capacity upon the completion of aforementioned part of the railway station.
- I expect the work on Prokop to be resumed next year and that another 100-150 million euros will be needed to complete the project. With its completion, an excellent 86,000 sqm area of the Sava Amphitheater, which no other city has, will be made available to investors - Mrkonjic pointed out.
As he said, about EUR 900 million have so far been invested in the construction of the Belgrade Railway Hub, a part of which is Prokop.
Construction of Prokop started in 1977, but it was soon discontinued due to lack of finance. It was resumed in the 1990s and then halted again in 2000.
The railway station Beograd Centar, also known as Prokop, represents the heart of the passenger system of the Belgrade Railway Hub and is situated in the central zone of the city, on the right bank of the Sava River.
