Supercompost production kicks off in Celarevo - Carslberg brewery cuts waste in half
(supercompost)
The Carlsberg Srbija company has announced in a release that it has halved the waste produced by the brewery in Celarevo since it started producing supercompost, a fertilizer and soil amendment that comes as a by-product of wastewater treatment at the brewery in Celarevo.
- Sludge from the wastewater treatment unit accounted for half of the waste disposed of at the landfill. Given that this sludge is now used to produce supercompost, Carlsberg Srbija has reduced the amount of waste by 50 percent - Carlsberg Srbija Production Director Milorad Djurisic told Beta news agency.
He pointed out that since it had started producing and selling supercompost, Carslberg Srbija had not been paying either for sludge disposal at the landfill or for its transport any more, which should bring the company annual savings of about EUR 20,000 on average.
Djurisic noted that supercompost was an organic soil amendment used as an additional fertilizer for degraded land, adding that it was different from regular compost in that it contained a high percentage of organic matters and an optimum percentage of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and humic acids.
When used in combination with fertilizer and other types of soil amendments, supercompost significantly enhances the quality of land.
According to him, supercompost was officially entered into the Register of soil amendments and fertilizers last year, whereas its production process, designed and tested in Serbia, was later adopted by other Carslberg breweries worldwide.
- Approximately 63.3 tonnes of supercompost are produced every month, that is, about 760 tonnes a year - said Djurisic.
