Price Limitation for Basic Foodstuffs in Serbia Soon to Expire – What Awaits Us, Extension or Price Increase?

The decree of the Government of Serbia by which the maximum prices of six basic foodstuffs are limited to the level of November 15 expires on February 8 and is expected to be extended. As the trade minister of Serbia, Tatjana Matic, says for Novosti, the ministry believes that it is necessary for this to be done considering that the inflation pressures are continuing.

– A new decree is being prepared, which will be sent to the government for adoption, and the foodstuffs whose price limitation is already in effect will be covered – Matic explains. – The prices of consumer goods are monitored on a daily level at the competent ministry and, since the decree came into effect, there have not been any bigger fluctuations. However, due to the continued inflation pressures, which, according to the estimates of the National Bank of Serbia, will last until the third quarter of the current year, our position is that it is necessary to extend the validity of the decree.

Store chains say that they don’t expect the measure to be cancelled any time soon.

– We are complying with the government’s decision without a problem, and there’s enough goods – they point out at a famous megamarket. – We expect the decree to remain in effect in the upcoming months as well.

Let us remind that the price limitation pertains to crystal sugar of one kilogram, flour types 500 and 400 smooth, in all packages up to and including five kilograms, sunflower oil of one liter, pork leg and UHT milk with 2.8% milk fat of one liter. The producers of these foodstuffs are obliged to deliver them in the average amounts for the past 12 months.
