Tihomir Mihailovic, radiologist and owner of specialized private practice Ultramedika - Medicine gave me and took everything away from me

If you ask him about his private life, he will continue talking about medicine. The reason is simple – he finds top of professionalism when one enjoys his or her life.

Tihomir Mihailović, one of the most respectable radiologist in Serbia, has been in ultrasound diagnostics for 30 years. After years of clinical experience, last two decades he has been committed every day to work with patients in his practice Ultramedika. In Vojvode Dobrnjca 34, in Belgrade, he carries out more than 40 different ultrasound checks and Mihailovic is most dedicated to checks in pregnancy and oncology.

Thanks to modern devices in his practice, checks of breast, ovaries, uterus, prostate and abdomen tumors are unique in Serbia. Mihailovic poured half a million euors in the equipment in the last twenty years and he has been paying his loan for a flat still. Therefore, he says, one cannot earn in private practice either.

- If you chose to be "a freelancer”, you have to make patient come to you for a good reason. One of them is equipment quality. Since I started private practice in ultrasound, no one had better device than me – Mihailovic says in his interview for eKapija.

The latest device, bought a month ago, has xMATRIX 4D technology, ultrasound pass through a patient increases for 80%, resolution for 200% and is one of a kind in Serbia. With a quality ultrasound image, sensitive sono-elastography guarantees the most accurate diagnostics of tumors and malign degree estimation.

Self-taught expert

Mihailovic obtained his master and PhD degree in ultrasound diagnostics. Although he started medicine by mistake, he picked up radiology because one cannot learn it by heart. However, the specialization was both a revelation and a disappointment for him.

Before the Institute for a mother and a child, he worked in E.R. at the Health center in Lazarevac, at transfusion medicine and internal department at CHC Dragisa Misovic and he was also a support at the Military Medcial Academy. After that he came to the Institute for a mother and a child where he worked as a general practice doctor at pediatrics before he started at radiology.

For an entire decade until he in 1993 opened private practice, he dealt with pediatric radiology and he acquired knowledge in ultrasound diagnosis in America- in Columbia and the Harvard University.

He admits he never stopped learning.

Result is the best adverting

He developed his specialty to the enviable level and the world medicine benefited from commitment of doctor Mihailovic to his work. A few years ago, he was the first to publish in a referential world magazine, a marker for early diagnosis of chromosomes in pregnancy, he greatly contributed to timely diagnosis of heart flaws in early pregnancy (11-14 week of pregnancy) and among the first started check heart of a fetus in the first three month (10-14 week of pregnancy) within early diagnosis of chromosome anomalies with the fetus, which was rare even in the world.

- When it comes to years, I am the oldest in Serbia who does ultrasound. There is no other doctor who spent more time in diagnosis of pregnancies and breasts than me. Unfortunately, my position is such that I have too much of pathology, much more than I would like. A patient always comes to me with a tension to confirm or neglect some assumptions. It puts burden and situations are horrible bot for me as a doctor and a patient since it is difficult to be delicate. You know a truth which is not good always and patient can estimate from a facial expression their destiny which is not an easy thing at all.

However, a patient will never leave his practice thinking everything is fine if it is not. He does not give false hopes, he is sincere and patients appreciate it. When he was young,, he thought his work published at the book of the best works in radiology, Radiology book, published once in two years and now he really finds important to know he helped a patient.

Absolute pleasure of occupation

For him, two weeks of vacation is luxury. He can afford seven days –off per year and occasional weekends with a bonus day.

- When I sum it up, medicine gave me everything and took everything away. On the other hand, you do not have time for light literature, movies, cafes and most of theatre plays starts at time when I am still at the practice.
