This is what Aleksandar Dimitrijević, CEO of the Digital Den startup venture studio, which for several years has been intensively supporting startups from the entire region, opening the door to global markets for them, said in an interview for eKapija.
Established in December 2021, Digital Den Hub has positioned itself as a key catalyst for innovative solutions and startup development throughout the Western Balkans. As Dimitrijević told us,
as a startup venture studio, Digital Den has the ability to transform initial ideas into concrete products, following their development through all stages, from concept to market.
- In addition, the studio provides support to already existing startups from Montenegro and the region, introducing them to its portfolio and providing them with resources for further development,
operational improvement and expansion into new, prospective markets. Our goal is to help strengthen the Montenegrin economy, but also to create a sustainable and dynamic startup ecosystem in the region. As a starting point for the transformation of ideas and a springboard for startups looking for investments, The Digital Den opens the door to global markets, with a special focus on the United States of America and the European Union - our interviewee explains.
Currently, Digital Den Hub manages a portfolio of more than 30 startups covering various industry verticals, offering them a unique opportunity for growth and development through customized support programs.
- The Digital Den Hub offers startups from Montenegro, as well as the Western Balkans a unique support program designed to encompass all stages of development - from the innovative idea to the validation of success. Through a series of strategic activities, Digital Den will enable each startup to receive the necessary resources, knowledge and contacts to realize their potential - he states.
As he clarifies, startups are selected via regional partner networks, registration through the Digital Den website and digital platforms, and through activities at universities and conferences. After the initial talks, each team is provided with support adapted to the stage of development - whether it is an idea in the beginning or preparation for conquering the market.
- For startups that are not originally from Montenegro, Digital Den facilitates the process of establishing companies in the country. Along with administrative, legal and financial support, startups are quickly and efficiently integrated into the Montenegrin ecosystem. In addition, the hub actively supports startups in preparation for pre-seed investments, including pitch deck creation, idea validation and market research, but also finding the investments themselves - Dimitrijević tells us.
Digital Den also works intensively on connecting startups with global markets, and projects like the Montenegro Technology and Startup Bridge (MTSB) enable startups to present themselves on the American market, linking with investors and participation in accelerator programs, opening the door to international success.
Mentoring support is important for the development of any startup, and startups in the Digital Den have access to mentors from the USA, Europe and the Balkans.
- Their experience and expertise are crucial for guiding young companies through the challenges of growth and development - Dimitrijevic says adding that through acceleration programs like the Startup Readiness Program, developed in cooperation with partners from the Netherlands, Digital Den imparts essential knowledge and skills to startup founders.
- Additionally, our cooperation with universities encourages innovation and entrepreneurship already at the academic level. This end-to-end support model allows startups access to mentors, capital and regional and international markets, while simultaneously contributing to the development of the Montenegrin economy and creating a sustainable innovation ecosystem - the interlocutor of eKapija points out.

Opening the door to the American market
Digital Den launched the very important project Montenegro Technology and Startup Bridge (MTSB) in cooperation with the State Department and the US Embassy in Montenegro. Dimitrijević says that the aim of this project is to connect startups from Montenegro and the Western Balkans with the global innovation ecosystem, especially the US market.
- This ambitious program is designed to facilitate knowledge transfer, networks and investments, providing startups with a unique opportunity to internationalize and conquer the global scene. The program is being implemented for the fourth year in a row - he says.
As he clarifies, the program consists of two key segments. The first one is the Soft landing program within which three of the most promising startups from Digital Den`s portfolio get the opportunity to stay in the USA.
- During the program, startups have access to top-notch mentors and experts which help them to successfully market their products in the US market. The aim of this segment is the opening of sister companies in the USA, thus ensuring their presence on one of the most important world markets - Dimitrijević points out.
The second segment is an accelerator program, where seven selected startups participate in an intensive accelerator program focusing on idea validation, development of market and business strategies, and the preparations for the prestigious SXSW conference in Austin, Texas.
- This event provides a unique opportunity to present ideas to global investors and key industry players. Inspired by the need for the internationalization of the Montenegrin startup ecosystem, the US Embassy and the State Department have recognized MTSB as a program of strategic importance for supporting innovation and young entrepreneurs. The project not only opens doors to the global market, but also builds bridges between Montenegrin and American innovators, investors and experts
- says our interlocutor, adding that with support from this program, startups from Montenegro and the region get the chance to become a part of the global innovation ecosystem.
- In this way, they consolidate their position on the international stage and contribute to the development of the local economy and entrepreneurship. Montenegro Technology and Startup Bridge really represents a step forward towards the improvement of innovations from the Balkans - he emphasizes.

Startup ecosystem in Montenegro
To the question of how he evaluates the startup ecosystem in Montenegro, the interlocutor of eKapija answers that it is still a young ecosystem which is in an intensive development phase.
- We are well on our way to becoming an important player on the regional and global scene. Compared to neighboring countries, such as Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia, which have started developing their ecosystems earlier and today have a more developed infrastructure and greater access to capital, Montenegro shows great potential for progress and building a competitive ecosystem - Dimitrijević says.
In order to make Montenegro recognizable on the regional and global startup scene, several key initiatives need to be carried out. The first, as he says, is to improve the legal framework.
- Work on the modernization of regulations for investing in startups has already started, and the goal is to create a favorable environment for the development of innovations and attracting capital. This leads us to the next segment, and that is attracting investments. Namely, establishment of risk capital funds, educating investors and encouraging investment in innovation projects it would enable startups to grow faster and compete on the global market - our interlocutor believes.
Another significant segment that needs to be worked on is cooperation with corporations and the academic community. As he explains, connecting startups with universities and the economy would create a solid foundation for innovation and knowledge sharing.
- Digital Den has been building partnerships with key ecosystem players in Western Europe and America for years, building bridges between Montenegrin startups and global opportunities. The acquired knowledge, experiences and contacts are transferred to the local ecosystem, thereby speeding up the growth process that has already become visible. Along with timely reforms and strategic investments, Montenegro has the opportunity to transform its startup ecosystem into a regional and globally recognizable innovation center, opening the door to new generations of entrepreneurs and laying the foundations for long-term economic development - he points out.
The region at a turning point
It is well known that a large number of startups from the region have attracted significant investments. We asked Dimitrijević if it is realistic to expect to get a "unicorn" from these areas.
- Behind each successful startup who stood out on the global stage there is a huge amount of work, dedication and making key decisions at the right moment. Success does not depend only on the founder`s vision, but also from the support of investors and everyone who believes in the idea and its potential. Although Montenegro is not yet the home of the "unicorn", the Balkans region has already shown that it possesses the talent and potential to create global success stories. Several startups from neighboring countries have already conquered the global markets, while Montenegro is taking significant steps towards its first great success. I firmly believe that the startups in our portfolio, FinalFind and Flourish, which are already achieving significant growth on the local and regional market, have the potential to be present on the global stage one day, especially taking into account that Flourish has already opened its representative office in the USA - he says.
He states that in order to fully exploit the ecosystem`s potential, the key is to access more venture capital, which provides startups with the funds necessary to grow and conquer the market,
then the focus on innovations that solve globally relevant problems and attract the attention of investors and partners worldwide.
- Creating an environment that motivates entrepreneurs to stay and build their companies in the region is also important, while simultaneously having support for internationalization. Montenegro and the Balkans are at a turning point - with strategic investments and support, we may witness the birth of new startups which will shape the global technological scene - Aleksandar Dimitrijević points out.

The biggest challenges for startups
All entrepreneurs in Montenegro and the region face numerous problems. When it comes to startups, these challenges seem to be even more pronounced. Our interlocutor says that challenges often test the resilience and vision of the founders, and the lack of financial resources, which makes it difficult to access the pre-seed and seed investments necessary for product development and launch is one of the most frequent obstacles for startups.
- Validation of the idea and market demand is also a challenge where many startups have to prove that their solutions really meet the needs of users and the market. It is also important to mention the scaling of business, in particular to international markets, which is often burdened by legal, logistical and operational challenges - he states.
Additionally, founders face challenges such as building and retaining teams, as well as team management, understanding of complex regulatory and bureaucratic infrastructure, which often slows down the development, lack of experience in business management, which makes strategic decision-making difficult, competition and market differentiation, where startups have to find a way to attract users and differentiate themselves from the competition, as well as high marketing, branding and distribution costs, which represent an additional obstacle in market conquest.
- Due to all of the above, Digital Den provides support through a comprehensive approach which includes mentoring support, with experts in various industries, legal and administrative assistance,
facilitating business, educational programs that strengthen the founders and teams, liaising with investors to ensure access to capital, and infrastructure resources, which are necessary for business growth and scaling - Dimitrijević points out.

State support
To the question of how much the state is ready to help and does it recognize the importance of the development of the startup scene, Dimitrijević says that Montenegro is increasingly recognizing the key role of the startup ecosystem development as the initiator of innovation and economic progress.
- With the adoption of the Law on Incentive Measures for the Development of Innovation and Research, more favorable conditions were created for the work of startup companies, including tax credits and other benefits. The register of innovation activities additionally facilitates business and attracting investments, which contributes to strengthening the position of Montenegro on the innovation map of the region - he says.
Institutional support, he adds, comes through collaboration with key actors such as the Science and Technology Park, Technopolis and the Innovation Fund, while the strategic programs of the Government and the Ministry of Science provide a foundation for long-term growth. It also indicates that universities play a significant role in encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit through educational programs and projects, like the Digital Den Corner initiative.
- Nevertheless, there are still challenges ahead of Montenegro. Complexity of the bureaucratic procedures, underdeveloped domestic investment market and the need for more investment in education and research represent obstacles that need to be overcome. These measures will not only enable sustainable innovation development, they will enable Montenegro to position itself as a regional leader in innovation and attracting foreign investments - he says.
When it comes to legislation, our interlocutor says that the aforementioned Law on Incentive Measures for the Development of Innovation and Research represents a key step in strengthening the Montenegrin innovation ecosystem. As he points out, through its implementation, Montenegro builds solid foundations for the sustainable development of startup companies, attracting local and foreign investments, and improving the competitiveness of its economy.
- This law brings a wide range of benefits that strengthen innovative projects and encourage entrepreneurship development first of all through tax incentives, so startup companies and innovative companies can achieve significant reductions in corporate tax, as well as contributions for employees in research and development sectors, which encourages employment in these areas - says Dimitrijević.
Also, it enables financial support, where the companies that are in the Register of Innovation Activities get access to state funds and programs aimed at research, development and innovation,
which enables them to operate more stably and grow. The startup registration process is also simplified, with additional business development resources, providing young businesses with support at the beginning of the journey.
Through additional tax incentives for investors, the law motivates private investments in innovative projects, thus stimulating the flow of capital to key sectors of development. Another benefit can be seen through international cooperation and knowledge transfer. where networking with global research centers and knowledge transfer from academic to business sectors become priorities, thereby further enriching local expertise.
- Implementation of this law is already bringing results. The startups from Digital Den`s portfolio have so far managed to attract almost EUR 4 million of investments, thanks to the benefits and support that the law provides - the interlocutor of eKapija points out.
He notes that connecting large companies and startups is crucial for creating a dynamic and sustainable business ecosystem. The synergy between these stakeholders brings multiple benefits
- Large companies get the chance to invest in innovative ideas and products, becoming more than just financial partners, but also the first users and strategic advisors for guiding those products towards market success.
- The Law on Incentive Measures for the Development of Innovations and Research opens the door for companies to invest in startups, with tax incentives, which attracted significant attention from the domestic business sector. I repeat, based on this law, Digital Den managed to attract 35 investors who invested almost EUR 4 million in startups from our portfolio over a period of three years. These investments provided startups with the necessary capital for initial development, from the idea to market-ready products. Such results clearly show that there is potential and interest of domestic companies to invest in innovative projects - he points out.

First venture capital fund
Last year, Digital Den organized the Balkan Tech Summit during which the Balkan Tech Fund was founded, the first venture capital fund in Montenegro. The foundation of this fund, says Dimitrijević, represents a milestone for further development of the startup community.
- This fund brings a key opportunity for continuous financing of innovative startup ideas within the domestic ecosystem, exactly in the stages when the state support, corporate investment or private investment reaches its limits. The significance of this fund lies in this fact that startups will no longer be forced to seek a Seed or Series A round of investment outside of the ecosystem. Instead, they will have the opportunity to secure the necessary funds for further growth and development in Montenegro - says the interlocutor.
When asked about activities in the coming period, he responds that Digital Den`s plans are ambitious,
with a clear focus on expanding the program towards the European Union, providing startups with the opportunity to choose between two strategic acceleration directions: the European and American market.
- We understand that different products and visions require a customized approach, and we want to enable startups to focus on the market that best suits their needs and potential. In addition, Digital Den is actively working to improve partnership relations with key countries in the USA, which have distinguished themselves as global leaders in specific industry verticals such as med-tech and fin-tech. Through these partnerships, our aim is to give startups additional support, directing them towards large markets and increasing their chances of global success - concludes Aleksandar Dimitrijević in an interview for eKapija.
