Sumadija's temple of science totals EUR 20 m - Construction of Centers of Excellence in Kragujevac could start in the spring 2015 (PHOTO)

The construction of the Centers for Excellence in Kragujevac will start in April 2015, i.e. at the beginning of the next construction season, it was confirmed for eKapija at the Project Management Unit, "Istrazivanje i razvoj" . The complex will also comprise long awaited Center for stem cells.

Although the beginning of the construction has been announced for a few times and construction workers did not go on site, if it is to judge upon intensive preparations, this time the construction could really start. Masinoprojekt kopring developed the preliminary and main design and preparation of tender for selection of contractors has been in progress and , as expected, should be released by the end of the year. JUP says the completion is expected in mid-2016. Apart from that, the fact that the construction for flats for young scientists from Kragujevac has started is encouraging.

The complex will comprise the main building and a few smaller facilities in the back. It will be located on a lot of 17.133 m2, at Ulica slobode Steet, next to new building of the Bureau for Emergency. The main building will have a basement, a ground floor and two floors on 11.000 m2.

Sumadija’s temple of science is designed as a multifunctional facility. It comprises three blocks, which are interconnected and make a functional unit. One block is planned for work with students and postgraduate students. The second is planned for the Faculty of stomatology and administrative offices while the third will have a number of research centers.

These centers are the Center for stem cells research (with stem cells bank), Center for molecular and cellular researches, Center for morphological researches, Center for pharmaceutical and pharmacology researches. Center for functional researches and Center for priority research areas of biomedicine (with additional facilities).

A total of EUR 20 m will be set aside for the construction and equipping of the Center of Excellence of the University of Kragujevac. The European Investment Bank will provide a loan of EUR 14 , while the City of Kragujevac and the University will provide the rest, JUP reminds for our portal. Preliminary and main design cost EUR 137.760 EUR.

The biggest expectations perhaps refer to the stem cells center. As previously announced, it will be a scientific institution with Kragujevac-based Faculty of Medicine. It will comprise four special units: educational, research, vivarium and cell bank.

The stem sell center will be included in the educational program and the regenerative medicine program focused on stem cells research and their implementation in medical treatments.

Some 200 flats were planned for young scientists and explorers which will be hired at the Centers of Excellence whose construction has already started. It is the complex in Dimitrija Tucovica street where six-floor lamellas will be. Crna Trava-based company, Bankovic, is in charge of the works.
