Old Castle in Beocin seeks tenants - Former pride of rich Spritzer family now in ruins
(Old Castle in Beocin)
The municipal administration of Beocin announced a public call for rental of the facility of Old Castle in Beocin, which is claimed to have been one of the most beautiful castles in this part of Europe.
Over the last ten years, there have been some serious attempts to renovate and reopen Old Castle. First negotiations were conducted six years ago with the Italian group Adige Bitumi. According to their estimates, renovation of the castle would cost 2.5 million euros. The Institute of Agricultural Economics in Belgrade wanted to make that castle the center for postgraduate studies in agriculture in association with the Embassy of Austria, but that only remained a wish. Nikolas Wais from Germany even signed a Protocol of intent, but that attempt ended in failure as well.
Now the public company Building Land and Road Economy is responsible for the castle, which was declared a monument of culture and put under protection of the Republic of Serbia in 1997. The last works on its protection were carried out in 1996 when the municipality of Beocin and the Beocin-based cement plant provided funds for reconstruction of the roof.
The castle was built in 1898, according to the project of Steindal Imre, and it belonged to the Spritzer family, rich landowners of German origin who had a significant stake in the cement plant in Beocin, so that the castle was decorated to match the economic status of its owners. The value of that facility is reflected in a blend of uniquely harmonized styles and modern artistic trends in architecture at the turn of the new century.
